Business and employment disputes often come with their own wrinkles — a contract that spells out (or fails to spell out) the terms, an employment relationship with its own separate rules, or a moving or storage company operating under industry-specific regulations. This hub gathers guidance on all of it, split out from the broader Small Claims Court Disputes hub so it's easier to find.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from the Small Claims Court Disputes hub?

This hub used to be a section inside the broader Small Claims Court Disputes hub. It was split out on its own because business, employment, and contract disputes tend to involve different considerations — like employment standards rules or moving-industry regulations — than consumer or property disputes do.

Is every workplace dispute suitable for Small Claims Court?

No. Many employment disputes, including most terminations and employment standards complaints, go through the Ministry of Labour or other processes instead of Small Claims Court. See the employment-related claims guide for where the line generally falls.

Can a business sue or be sued in Small Claims Court?

Yes. Small Claims Court handles disputes involving individuals, sole proprietorships, and corporations, up to the monetary limit, subject to the usual rules about who can be named as a party.

Is this legal advice for my specific dispute?

No — these are general educational articles, not legal advice. For guidance on your specific facts, consider speaking with a lawyer or licensed paralegal. See our disclaimer for more detail.
