The rest of this site is organized around action — starting a claim, defending one, moving through the court process. Insights is different: it's the deeper library of in-depth, plain-language guides for anyone who wants the full picture before — or instead of — diving into a step-by-step checklist. Looking for something specific? Use the search icon in the header, or jump to a hub below.

Seven Insights Hubs

Every hub below organizes a stage of a case into featured guides, grouped articles, and related tools — the seven main hubs on this site.

Two related mini-hubs remain available within this library: Evidence, Documents and Witnesses (part of the Court Process hub above) and Common Claim Types (part of the Disputes hub above).

Your Case Journey

A condensed view of how a plaintiff's case generally moves, start to finish — see the The Small Claims Court Process hub for the in-depth version.

  1. 1

    Before You File

Confirm you have a claim, name the right defendant, and work out what to claim.

  2. 2

    File & Serve

Prepare and file a Plaintiff's Claim, then formally serve the defendant.

  3. 3

    Defence

The defendant files a Defence, or risks a default judgment.

  4. 4

    Settlement Conference

A required, informal meeting to see whether the case can resolve early.

  5. 5

    Trial

If it doesn't settle, the case is decided by a deputy judge.

  6. 6

    Judgment

The court issues a decision; either side may have narrow appeal rights.

  7. 7

    Collection

The winning side may need to enforce the judgment if it isn't paid voluntarily.

How Insights differs from the step-by-step guides

Each Insights article covers similar ground to a fuller guide elsewhere on this site, but with a different job to do — less checklist, more context: why a step matters, what it feels like in practice, and what tends to trip people up. Every article links to the fuller step-by-step guide on the same topic, so you can move from the bigger picture here into the specific how-to whenever you're ready.

Editorial standards

Every Insights article is written in plain language, checked against official Ontario sources for any specific figure or deadline, and reviewed periodically for accuracy — see our legal review policy. Nothing here is legal advice; see our full disclaimer.

Frequently asked questions

Should I read Insights before or after the main guides?

Either order works. Some people prefer the bigger-picture Insights article first, then the detailed guide when they're ready to act; others go straight to the step-by-step guide and only read the related Insights piece out of curiosity.

Are Insights articles legal advice?

No — like everything on this site, they're general educational information, not legal advice, and not a substitute for professional advice about your specific situation.

Will more Insights articles be added?

This is a growing collection — check back, or browse the full site by topic using the navigation above.
